Based in the foothills of the Himalayas in Gulmi, Nepal, I grew up with a unique taste of Coffee. It wasn’t until I came to the western world, I could tell the difference. And to my utter surprise and rather frustration, I wasn’t able to find the same taste in the coffees including all specialities ones that I have tried around.
With more research into my taste of coffees, it turns out the coffee taste that I grew up with was hardly introduced to the world. Despite being one of the richest flavours, all coffee lovers and the speciality houses around the world has yet to be introduced with the Himalayan taste.
Hardly did I know back then that place where I grew up and the surrounding areas have an ideal climate required for coffee trees. The soil and suitable climate of the Himalayas promises one of the best coffee specialities and the taste is reminiscent of the coffee trees that I grew up in our garden.
It wasn’t until recently when we were brainstorming some social innovative ideas at the business school here in Cambridge, I started thinking about how the coffee back in Nepal can be used for social good along with acquainting the world with a new coffee taste.
So, there began the idea behind Himalayan coffee - an organic and fair trade coffee right from the foothills of the Himalayas.
Home to the Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak and seven of the world's 10 highest peaks, Nepal offers an ideal climate to grow high-quality coffee beans.
The coffee produced in these regions of Nepal is highly rated by trade magazines all over the world, with the California-based trade magazine allocating 90 points on a scale of 50 to 100 in a coffee review recently.
The world has yet to be introduced to this unique Himalayan taste of coffees and that's where Himalayan Coffee comes in.
